My Car Is Knocking Like A Landlord On The 5th?

I have a 78 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and it is my only car. I accidentally left the keys in the ignition all night and drained the battery. The very next night ‘someone’ tried to steal it. (They are always trying to steal it) They broke in and strip the column to hell trying to start it, to no avail. I file a report and the policeman was kind enough to show me how to start my car ‘temporarily’ with a screwdriver. I, having no money for a new ignition or column, now start my car with the screwdriver. Aside from that, my tranny had been slipping and I would have to stomp on the gas like 3 to 4 times before it would kick into gear to back out(all the other gears worked fine. ) I kind-of liked this feature because, one night at my boyfriends apartment I came out to my car to get something and there were like 5 guys sitting in my car. (I guess they saw the broken column and thought it would be an simple steal. ) But, once again, their plot was foiled. It started alright but, it wouldn’t go into reverse and they didn’t know the trick. So they bailed. O. K. , quit snoring, here’s the question. I’m driving down the freeway doing 65 mph and my car starts knocking and I’m not talking (a ping) like from terrible gas, it’s really knocking. (like a landlord on the 5th, kind of knocking. ) When I’m driving in a residential area no knocking but, over 65 mph, it’s on. What the heck could this be? I really can’t afford a new car and I want to know if this knocking is fixable? Anyone have a clue?

Your engine is shot. There is no fixing it. Heavy oil might slow down the process a small but pretty soon your going to have a dead engine. Other things that can be done to prolong it’s life is to not drive over 60 MPH and accelerate slow. It’s impossible to tell when it will go, but it’s coming. Could be months or it could be the next time you drive it.
Your transmission is going out too. It’s only a matter of time before the other gears fail.
The best bet it to save as much money as possible and buy another car when the Olds dies.

Your car’s engine is on its last leg.Have engine oil checked, try heavier oil, like 20-50W.Or add a can of oil treatment into the crankcase, the point is to increase oil viscocity in order to compensate for worn-out bearings.Any problem is fixable, but yours sound like not worthwhile.Excellent luck, you need it.

I once saw a car very similar to yours (late 70s GM with a V8) that had a terrible knock from one of the pushrods breaking through the valve rocker and hitting the valve cover.
You should sell that heap while it still runs at all.

first of all, chenge the oil and oil filter. place a excellent grade 50 weight oil in. Befor you place the oil fill cap back, shine a flash light in the fill tube, while the engine is running, just to make shore there is oil spraying around in there

u may have a knock from rod bearings or have a cracked glide wheel..both can sound the same…there are ways to pin point the noise
