there are many hypothesis about what really causes snoring. the medical community has no solid evidence supportive of any of it. most is educated guess work and lab study. what is known for sure is that obese people have a predisposition to snoring, certain diseases causing muscle wasting may be the fault for a small segment of the population, it seems more predominant in older men then any other population group, and central sleep apnea a neuological condition is also associated with snorers. snoring is a symptom of something but not always do medical persons agree what it is a symptom of. what is known for treatment is that CPAP helps many snorers and their spouses. it doesnt cure what is incorrect it just overcomes the week tissue in the throat allowing a person to rest completely.
some people respond simply to a curved pillow under the neck allowing for better airflow while asleep. although a few people are helped this way it doesnt cure anything just helps relieve symptoms. tonsilectomies sometimes help younger persons, throat scrapings if he is a young obese kid might help, and sometimes reaming out the nasal passages can help. no single remedy except CPAP has been shown to be the best therapy to relieve snoring in anyone of any age.

Snoring is one of the signs of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is the constriction of the air breathing into the lungs. I use a continous positive air protection CPAP unit every night. Instead of 72 episodes per hour I am down to 2. Plus my wife says I do not snore. You need to see a physician for evaluation.

Is your brother overweight – sometimes that can cause snoring. Maybe a doctor who specializes in snoring would help. In the meantime, breath right strips may help some. They open up the nasal passages.

What Debbie said about the ‘Breath Rite’ is excellent. Another thing is to NOT have more than “ONE” honestly flat pillow under your brothers head.
    ear pugs
    fans
    go out
it is endless…. I live with a snorer!

I do not exactly know what causes it, but sleeping on your side can relieve it.
